So when you get your results back, it should have two important numbers on there. The first one is a raw mark out of after scalingwhile the second one is a number between 1 and 7 for your GPA. Here's an example.

In this guide the difference between the two systems, how to calculate your average and some common misunderstandings will be discussed.

It's good to keep in mind that most employers are aware of this fact and it should not be a problem when seeking employment, and that your average is not going to be the only criteria considered for graduate jobs.

The "weighted" in the title refers to the fact that subjects are weighted against their respective credit point value. Despite what the name suggests, subjects are not weighted "scaled" by difficulty.

Some universities or faculties do weight subjects in later years heavily compared to first year subjects, but you will have to read up on this at your universities' site. Most other universities use GPA.You can check your own weighted averages using the calculation forms provided on the web.

Substitution, by approval, for equivalent courses taken in other schools at UNSW is counted in the WAM, and the weighting is determined by the School depending on the level of difficulty of the course. Where electives are taken in addition to the stipulated number of electives for a student's program, their WAM will comprise the marks from the first n courses taken at each level, where n is the stipulated number of electives for that year of the student's program.

Subsequent electives for that year do not contribute to the WAM. Course exemptions are not included in the calculations. This applies to advanced standing students as well as to students on exchange programs. The exception to this rule is students completing a thesis on an exchange with an institution approved by the School. Thanks, Quentin. Templar P vs NP. Your interpretatin of GPA is correct, as long as it is a distinction or the same grade the GPA is the same, regardless of the actual mark.

Otherwise, refer to the above post, or wait for more knowledgeable people. That's a little incorrect. Under the old program, there were 3 classes of honours, so HD average would just be for first class.

I don't know the exact cut offs, and my sister can't remember, but I do remember a guy who failed first year and ended up getting 2nd class first div honours. LesBleus: umm where did u get that information from? Newc had honours at least it did, 3 or so yrs back. Enrolment Continuing: The course is taken over more than one Teaching Period and the assessment will be finalised in a later Teaching Period. Excluded Misconduct. Student has been permanently excluded on the grounds of academic misconduct.

Fail: Unsatisfactory performance, below the minimum expected level. This grade characterises work which shows a significant lack of understanding of the topic or its context, and is therefore unsatisfactory. High Distinction: An outstanding performance; mark range Indicates that the student has produced outstanding work, and has demonstrated a high level of understanding across the entire content of the course.

Coursework Students Not Completed: Course assessment requirements have not been completed in a timely manner. Instead, it denotes that the research program was not completed.

Course discontinued without failure. Enrolment in this course is not recorded on myUNSW or an official academic transcript.

Pass Conceded. A performance below that normally required for a pass. Was granted when the overall performance was considered to warrant such a concession, and allowed progression to another course for which the former course was a prerequisite.

Professional Experience: Student undertaking a course designated as professional experience. Result pending. Permitted Withdrawal.
