Ensemble kalman filter python

FilterPy is a Python library that implements a number of Bayesian filters, most notably Kalman filters. I am writing it in conjunction with my book Kalman and Bayesian Filters in Python [1]a free book written using Ipython Notebook, hosted on github, and readable via nbviewer.

However, it implements a wide variety of functionality that is not described in the book. As such this library has a strong pedalogical flavor. It is rare that I choose the most efficient way to calculate something unless it does not obscure exposition of the concepts of the filtering being done. I will always opt for clarity over speed.

I do not mean to imply that this is a toy; I use it all of the time in my job. I mainly develop in Python 3. At the moment I can not tell you the lowest required version; I tend to develop on the bleeding edge of the Python releases. I am happy to receive bug reports if it does not work with older versions, but testing backwards compatibility is not a high priority at the moment. As the package matures I will shift my focus in that direction.

FilterPy requires Numpy [2] and SciPy [3] to work. The tests and examples also use matplotlib [4]. For testing I use py. However, it is also hosted on PyPi, and unless you want to be on the bleeding edge of development I recommend you get it from there.

To install from the command line, merely type:. You can get the very latest code by getting it from GitHub and then performing the installation. I will say I am not following particularly stringent version control discipline. I do not promise that any check in that is not tagged with a version number is usable.

If you want the entire repo leave out the depth parameter, or fork the repo if you plan to modify it. There are several submodules, each listed below. Something lke. I try to provide examples in the help for each class, but this documentation needs a lot of work.Do you have a GitHub project? Now you can sync your releases automatically with SourceForge and take advantage of both platforms. Calibre has the ability to view, convert, edit, and catalog e-books of almost any e-book format.

The tool allows for data acquisition from triads of accelerometers, angular rate sensors and magnetometers to be transformed into human body movements. There are different SW blocks including: unit interconnection, data calibration, data processing and visualization. The data are calibrated by six-position test or two-step algorithm and processed by Extended Kalman Filter or Unscented Kalman Filter. The final data are fitted to the human body model including its limitations This application allows to track multiple agents in a indoor wireless sensor network through an implementation of a variant extended Kalman filter.

Furthermore, any measurement is corrupted to some degree by noise, biases, and device inaccuracies, and so a means of extracting valuable information from a noisy signal must be provided as well. This section is based on the work of. The random process is called the process noise and represents modeling error and disturbances on the system.

The random variable is called the measurement noise and represents noise on the sensors. Note that the sample rate does not need to be xed. The continuous-discrete Kalman filter has the form. The covariance of the estimation error at time t is given by.

Note that P t is symmetric and positive semi-denite, therefore, its eigenvalues are real and non-negative. Recall that. Therefore, minimizing tr P minimizes the estimation error covariance. The Kalman filter is derived by nding L to minimize tr P. The equations of the Kalman filter can be categorized into two groups: time update equations and measurement update equations.

Time Update Equations Differentiating x we get Solving the differential equation with initial condition we obtain. Therefore, since Q is symmetric we have that P evolves between measurements as. Our goal is to minimize tr by choosing L.

A required condition is that. Summarizing the Kalman filter we have two sets of equations. The time update equations, which propagate the state estimates.

In the previous section we assumed that the system propagation model and measurement model are linear. Therefore the model in 36 becomes. This case is called the extended Kalman filter. Pick an output sample rate that is less than the sample rates of the sensors. In real world applications, measurements usually have processing and communication delays which cannot be ignored.

After that, this estimation is propagated forward in time. If another measurement more recent is available, then it is incorporated into the estimation and the states are propagated again in time. Therefore, opposed to how the filter worksthis filter can run in real time. Pseudo-code for the continuous discrete delayed extended Kalman filter is given below. Gaussian is a continuous function over the space of locations and the area underneath sums up to 1. The Gaussian is defined by two parameters, the mean, often abbreviated with the Greek letter Mu, and the width of the Gaussian often called the variance Sigma square.

So, our job in common phases is to maintain a Mu and a Sigma square as our best estimate of the location of the object we are trying to find. The exact formula is an exponential of a quadratic function where we take the exponent of the expression. Now in the equation below if x equals Mu, then the numerator becomes 0, and if x of 0, which is one. It turns out we have to normalize this by a constant, 1 over the square root of 2 Pi Sigma square.

What is Variance? The variance is a measure of Gaussian spread i. Larger variances correspond to shorter Gaussians. How to shift the mean? In Kalman filters, we iterate measurement measurement update and motion prediction. And the update will use Bayes rule, which is nothing else but a product or a multiplication. In prediction, we use total probability which is a convolution or simply an addition. How to update the parameter?

Its implementation in code is as follows:. How to implement the Gaussian motion? When you run this, your first estimate for the position should basically become 5—4. Your uncertainty shrinks to 3. You then predict that you add 1, but the uncertainty increases to 5. You update again based on measurement 6, you get your estimate of 5.

You move 1 again. You measure 7. You move 2. You measure 9. You move 1. You measure 10, and you move a final 1.

What better way to learn? Thanks for all your work on publishing your introductory text on Kalman Filtering, as well as the Python Kalman Filtering libraries. Sensors are noisy. The world is full of data and events that we want to measure and track, but we cannot rely on sensors to give us perfect information.

The GPS in my car reports altitude. Each time I pass the same point in the road it reports a slightly different altitude. My kitchen scale gives me different readings if I weigh the same object twice.

In simple cases the solution is obvious. If my scale gives slightly different readings I can just take a few readings and average them. Or I can replace it with a more accurate scale. But what do we do when the sensor is very noisy, or the environment makes data collection difficult? We may be trying to track the movement of a low flying aircraft. We may want to create an autopilot for a drone, or ensure that our farm tractor seeded the entire field.

I work on computer vision, and I need to track moving objects in images, and the computer vision algorithms create very noisy and unreliable results. This book teaches you how to solve these sorts of filtering problems. I use many different algorithms, but they are all based on Bayesian probability. In simple terms Bayesian probability determines what is likely to be true based on past information.

If I asked you the heading of my car at this moment you would have no idea. In 2 seconds my car could not turn very far so you could make a far more accurate prediction. You are using past information to more accurately infer information about the present or future. The world is also noisy. That prediction helps you make a better estimate, but it also subject to noise. I may have just braked for a dog or swerved around a pothole.FilterPy library. This implements the ensemble Kalman filter EnKF.

The EnKF uses an ensemble of hundreds to thousands of state vectors that are randomly sampled around the estimate, and adds perturbations at each update and predict step. It is useful for extremely large systems such as found in hydrophysics. As such, this class is admittedly a toy as it is far too slow with large N. There are many versions of this sort of this filter. This formulation is due to Crassidis and Junkins [1].

It works with both linear and nonlinear systems. Number of of measurement inputs. Measurement function. May be linear or nonlinear - converts state x into a measurement. Return must be an np. State transition function. May be linear or nonlinear.
